Menacing

A hungry lionfish (Pterois volitans) peers into a buttress of coral (Agaricia tenuifolia) to find its next meal. This fish was targeting juvenile yellowtail damselfish (Microspathodon chrysurus), and was doing jaw exercises as it readied for an attack. Lionfish are invasive to the Caribbean and have no natural predators, thus they are reproducing in unsustainable numbers and are limiting reproduction of their prey. In order to control the stock, locals have tried to market lionfish as a delicious meal, though some chefs still refuse to cook it as they say that the venomous spines are too dangerous to cook with.
