According to a sign on the pier at Magee Beach Park, Port Aransas, TX:
Consume and Help Conserve our Reefs and Fisheries
Red Lionfish (Pterois volitans) is a voracious invasive species native to the Indo-Pacific Ocean that has been introduced by humans into the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean. In 2010 lionfish reached Texas offshore coral reefs and banks and since then it is negatively impacting our coastal ecosystem and valuable fisheries. It can be found in natural and artificial reefs, from coral reefs to jetties and piers, and seagrass beds.
LIONFISH HAVE VENOMOUS SPINES AND CAN CAUSE SEVERE PAIN.
If you catch a lionfish be extremely careful; do not come in contact with the dorsal, anal or ventral spines. If stung, immerse the affected area in hot water until pain disappears. Although they are NOT considered lethal, seek medical attention as soon as possible.

Lionfish is safe to consume and just a few precautions need to be taken to prepare:
- Use gloves and scissors to clip all the fins and tail.
- Remove scales, head and guts, and dispose [of]
